EditDV/Cinestream
I use Digital Origin EditDV (now CineStream 3)
for video editing, and find it to be very powerful, easy to use and having a 'quality feel' about it.
Although not as feature-bloated as some applications (no naff page curl transitions and the like), EditDV is fast and robust,
and highly usable. It has a loyal following and excellent support, both
official and unofficial.
For some hints on a couple of issues that sometimes cause confusion take a look at the

- Timecode, including how to deal with discontinuous timecode
