Rolf's Virtual Lounge
This is a virtual tour of my lounge, complete with cat. Use the arrow buttons to move around.
If your browser supports client-side image maps you can also navigate by clicking on
hotspots on the image itself. (Note that clicking towards one side of the image means pan
in that direction, and not zoom in to the area where you clicked!)
Tools Used
This presentation was originally prepared in 1994, using a standalone Macintosh
application called Hyperslider that lets you define hotspots and link images into a
slideshow. The link information was later converted to HTML using a MacPerl script,
and the images were scaled, enhanced and converted to JPEGs using DeBabelizer and GraphicConvertor. The buttons
were borrowed from Hyperslider and converted to transparent GIFs using Photoshop
and Transparency 1.0.
Image Capture
The easiest way to get high quality images onto a computer is with PhotoCD.
As a low cost alternative, however, the images here were recorded on video and
then captured using the video digitisation capabilities of an
Apple Macintosh 630AV.
As well as giving slightly lower quality images, using a camcorder also
explains why some of the links don't quite work visually, because even at the
widest angle zoom setting only a restricted field of view was available.
Further Information
If you're interested in proper virtual reality you may want to take a look at
Quicktime VR or
VRML.
Check this paper for details on client-side image maps.

I've also done a virtual tour round the village of Snitterfield.
