You need to render to do this:

Import a DV movie into CatDV, select the scene(s) you want to add a date to, then use the Export As Movie(s) command. Select Advanced and check the 'Add date & time text track' box. Select the 'Recompress' option and choose the desired output format and compression settings, then press OK.

You can also add a burnt-in timecode display in the same way by checking the 'Add timecode track' box.
