CatDV uses QuickTime plugins and there are various ways to install additional codecs beyond the core support for MOV, MPEG-1, MPEG-4, DV, and AVI files, among others, provided in QuickTime itself. Some of these 3rd party codecs are only available far Mac OS X.

Mac OS X

• Final Cut Studio adds support for many additional codecs such as HDV 1080i, DVCPRO, and more
• Apple MPEG-2 component
• Flip4Mac WMV adds support for Windows Media
• MXF Components for Final Cut Pro (formerly Flip4Mac XDCAM) adds support for various MXF formats
• Perian adds support for FLV, MKV, AVI, DivX etc.
• MXF4mac adds support for P2, XDCAM and Avid MXF
• Calibrated{Q} MXF Import for OSX supports P2 and XDCAM
• Glue Tools provide support for Cineon/DPX, also for Phantom Cine and Arriflex cameras.
• NEO Player codec for CineForm files
• DivX
• Xiph supports creation and playback of Ogg Vorbis and Theora
• x264 provides a faster h.264 encoder than Apple's implementation

Windows

• Apple MPEG-2 component
• Calibrated{Q} MXF Import for Windows supports P2 and XDCAM
• Raylight Decoder DVCPROHD/DVCPRO50 decoder for Windows
• DivX
• Xiph supports creation and playback of Ogg Vorbis and Theora

Manufacturers' codecs

• REDCODE for RED ONE camera
• Avid QuickTime Codecs LE 1.10 provide support for Avid Meridian, DNxHD, DV100, etc.
