Question

Can I import a log from MS Excel into CatDV?

Answer

Yes, if the columns in your Excel spreadsheet correspond to the ones CatDV uses to describe a clip then you can export from Excel as tab-separated text and import the resulting file into CatDV.

The first line of the tab-separated text file should be a header line defining the contents of each column. CatDV recognises the following columns:

  • IN
  • OUT
  • IN 2
  • OUT 2
  • NAME
  • BIN
  • TYPE
  • NOTES
  • TAPE
  • MEDIA FILENAME
  • VIDEO
  • AUDIO
  • GOOD
  • QT TRACKS
  • METADATA
  • RECORD DATE
  • IMPORTER
  • MARK
  • USER 1 to USER N

The only columns you must have are IN and NAME, though OUT, TAPE, NOTES and other fields should be provided if possible. The order of fields doesn't matter, and any which aren't recognised will be ignored.

A useful technique if you're not sure of the format is to export some clips as tab-separated text from within CatDV. This will give you an example of the kind of file it is looking for.
