Sales and Support FAQ
QuestionI have a large catalog and sometimes run out of memory.
AnswerBy far the largest drain on memory in this kind of application is the display of thumbnails. Although CatDV handles memory allocation automatically and you shouldn't normally need to worry about it, here are some tips that will help you to reduce memory consumption as much as possible:
- Create several smaller catalogs rather than one big one. (The Browse Catalogs command simplifies managing and searching across multiple catalogs.)
- Reduce the size of thumbnails in Preferences. (This affects the size of thumbnails that are stored in the catalog.)
- Display your catalog as a list view. If you use a grid view choose one whose thumbnail size matches that of the thumbnails stored in the catalog (eg. if you have "Large 192x144" thumbnails then choose "Large Icons", and so on).
- Monitor the application memory size in the bottom right of the window. If this gets too high and the application becomes unresponsive you may be able to reclaim some memory by double clicking this field and clicking "Flush Buffers" in the memory dialog.
