Question

I'm exporting clips from CatDV to Final Cut Pro but the timecode doesn't agree!

Answer

There are several possible issues here and things to check:

  • First, make sure you use FCP XML files rather than batch lists to transfer clip information, as these have proper support for transferring subclips, sequences, and media references.
  • Make sure you are using the latest version of CatDV. For example, versions prior to 4.1.3 had a bug that meant subclips inside a sequence weren't exported properly.
  • If the Media Start values for clips in FCP all seem to be zero, the most likely explanation is that your XML file includes references to preview files and these don't have a timecode track. Either use Media > Manage Preview Movies to add a timecode track, or temporarily rename the preview directory so FCP doesn't find it when you import the XML file. If there's a media file present, Final Cut reads the timecode from that and ignores any timecode specified in the XML file. (Because they don't support a timecode track .mp4 files are therefore unsuitable as previews when using Final Cut Pro).
  • It's normal for FCP's Media End column and CatDV's Out column to be out by one frame, as FCP uses inclusive numbering whereas CatDV's Out point is the timecode of the following frame. Look at the Duration fields, these should agree. You can also configure your CatDV view to use the "Out (Incl.)" column if you wish.
  • Final Cut Pro 5 has a bug whereby it incorrectly reads the duration of subclips and shortens them by one frame. CatDV 4.1.3 (or later) compensates for this by extending the duration of subclips by one frame on export. If the Media End and CatDV Out column seem to differ by two frames then you're seeing a combination of this and the previous issue and you should upgrade to the latest version of CatDV.
  • Other possible issues relate to the timecode format not matching, eg. mixing 29.97 fps drop-frame and 30.0 fps non drop-frame timecode.
