CatDV Release Notes
Release Notes for CatDV v6.0.1
Thank you for downloading CatDV 6.0. This application will function in a
save- and print- disabled evaluation mode for 30 days unless you enter a valid
registration code.
You can purchase CatDV online.
If you have a CatDV 5 license you will need to purchase an upgrade to use CatDV 6.0 (users who purchased CatDV on or after 1 April 2007 are entitled to a free update).
Workgroup and Enterprise Server users please note that this version works with CatDV Server 5.1.1. At this time only the client application is being updated. (A server update with additional features is planned for late Summer 2007.)
IMPORTANT: You may install and use this software only in accordance with the
terms of the enclosed software license agreement.
This product includes software developed by the Apache Software Foundation
(http://www.apache.org/).
What is CatDV?
CatDV is a fully cross-platform clip logging and media cataloging application, designed to
enhance the productivity of video editors using their existing editing application and anyone who deals with digital media files.
For further details on how to use CatDV, please see the
CatDV Reference Guide which is included with the download (in HTML format) and is also accessible via the on-line help.
The original CatDV Pro 3.0 User Manual (a PDF document) is not included with this
installer but is available at http://www.squarebox.co.uk/download1.html
as a separate download. Even though it hasn't been updated for later versions of CatDV
you should browse the PDF user manual first if you
are new to CatDV as it has a lot of useful introductory material.
If you obtained CatDV from CD-ROM, please check the web site http://www.squarebox.co.uk/download.html
to make sure you have latest version (you can also use the web shortcuts in the
CatDV Help menu). CatDV is updated regularly, with both bug fixes and feature
enhancements, and you should normally ensure you are using the latest available
version.
CatDV 6 Editions
CatDV 6 is provided in one of two editions: Standard Edition and
Professional Edition. The latter has additional features, such as named filters, unlimited user-defined columns, and more file formats supported. The Professional Edition can also
be used as a client to the optional CatDV Workgroup or Enterprise Server that stores a
central database of clips that can be shared between multiple users).
For further details please see the main CatDV web site.
There are separate downloads for the Standard Edition and Professional Edition,
though as they are normally updated at the same time the version numbers and release
notes for both editions are kept in step with each other.
Windows Installation
Requirements
- Windows 2000, XP, or Vista
- QuickTime 6.5 or later
- QuickTime for Java
- Java (JRE 1.4.2 or later)
- A minimum of 512 MB RAM and a 1024x768 display is recommended.
Java is available from www.java.com. CatDV 6.0 is compatible
with Java J2SE 1.4.2 or later, including Java 5 (the new name for Java 1.5.0) and Java 6.
QuickTime is available for download from www.apple.com/quicktime.
(If you are using a version of the QuickTime installer prior to 7.0.2 you need to
select a custom
installation and install all the QuickTime components, in particular
QuickTime for Java and the QuickTime Imaging components.) Ideally you should run the
QuickTime installer after first installing Java.
Unpack the CatDV???.zip ZIP archive (where ??? is the version number of the release
you are installing) using an application like WinZip or Aladdin Expander. CatDV does not have a special installer as it doesn't place any files in system directories and you can install the
CatDV application wherever you want. We suggest
you create a new directory called CatDV in your Program Files folder as the destination
but you can install CatDV elsewhere if you prefer, such as on your desktop.
When you unzip the archive you should see the following items:
- Read Me.html - this file
- CatDV License.txt - license agreement which you agree to comply with
- CatDV Manual.html - abbreviated user manual
- CatDV Pro.exe (or CatDV.exe) - CatDV application launcher
- Sample.cdv - a sample catalog
- lib - a sub-directory containing the following files:
catdv.jar, jakarta-regexp-1.2.jar, MRJToolkitStubs.zip,
xalan.jar, resources.jar, etc.
Launch the application by double clicking CatDV Pro.exe. Ensure you can open the
sample catalog "Sample.cdv" by using the File | Open catalog... command within CatDV.
Mac OS X Installation
Requirements
- PowerPC or Intel Macintosh, running Mac OS X 10.3 or later
- Java 1.4.2 or later is required
- A minimum of 512MB RAM and a 1024x768 display
You do not need to install Java or QuickTime, as all the required components are included as standard parts of the Mac OS X system.
Download the CatDV???.dmg file then double click to mount the disk image (where ??? is the version number you are installing).
Open the CatDV Installer volume and simply drag the CatDV folder to your hard drive.
We suggest you copy it to your Applications folder but you can install it anywhere
you choose. Inside the CatDV folder you should see the following items:
- Read Me.html - this file
- CatDV Pro - the application
- CatDV License.txt - license agreement which you agree to comply with
- CatDV Manual.html - abbreviated user manual
- Sample.cdv - a sample catalog
Drag the CatDV application to your dock if you want a convenient way to launch it.
Upgrading a Previous Version
CatDV doesn't install files outside its directory (apart from its preferences file in your home area, which is used by all versions of CatDV) so updating or switching between versions is easy.
On Mac OS X, after dragging the folder to your hard disk you might end up with two versions, eg.
/Applications/CatDV 5.1.0
/Applications/CatDV 6.0.1
Simply launch CatDV from the newer folder, then once you're satisfied it works you can delete the old version. The only thing to remember is if you dragged the application to your dock as a shortcut. If so, just remove the old icon and drag the new application to the dock instead.
Under Windows the situation is similar and you might end up with two directories, eg.
C:\Program Files\Square Box\CatDV 5.1.0
C:\Program Files\Square Box\CatDV 6.0.1
Again, just run CatDV.exe from the latest version and delete (or rename) the old directory when you no longer need it.
