New features in CatDV 8.1

CatDV 8.1 includes a number of fixes and feature enhancements, including:

CatDV 8.1 New Features
  • HTML printing enhancements
  • Ability to create customised HTML layouts for the clip details panel
  • The Export As Stills command now lets you choose which frame(s) to export
  • Fixes and improvements to the Verbatim Logger
  • Integrated support for archiving and restoring files to a Cache-A LTO archive appliance (requires purchase of the separate CatDV Archiving Option).
  • Support for importing and displaying common camera RAW formats
  • Improved Exif support
  • Ability to specify a batch of files to import using a CatDV XML file
  • On the Mac, it's possible to perform a Spotlight search to quickly find files from the file system even if they haven't yet been imported into a catalog
  • Ability to enter a supplementary license code in the registration panel to support purchase of additional options after initial registration
  • Integrated spell checking
  • Use a mouse scroll wheel to quickly scrub through a movie

When using CatDV Pro 8.1 with the CatDV Server the following features are added:

New Networked Features
  • Quickly access recent server queries and catalogs via the File menu
  • User field definitions and picklist values can be saved to a field definition set which can be shared between different production groups (so settings stay in synch without having to make the same changes in each group).
  • Ability to lock particular user-defined fields so they can't be edited by normal users, and to mark fields as being mandatory so you can't save catalogs with incomplete data to the server
  • Ability to configure the client so it automatically connects to the server, so users need to log on as soon as the application is launched and always get the latest settings from the server.
  • Improved auditing, and finer permission control

These are in addition to the features that were added in CatDV 8.0:

CatDV 8 New Features
  • Improved view configuration, including enhanced film strip views and an optional HTML Summary view in the clip details panel
  • Improvements to the search dialog, including relative date range searches and an easier to use 'simple' search panel
  • It is now possible to perform a 'quick search' against the whole of the server, not just clips open in memory
  • Verbatim Logger Plus includes a resizable player window, spell checking, and programmable keyboard macros (for example, press F1 to insert an event marker when a goal is scored, F2 for a penalty)
  • The new Voiceover tool allows you to record a voice over commentary track over a sequence
  • The media player can optionally display an audio waveform for more accurate selection of In and Out points
  • Numerous minor fixes and improvements, such as easier management of large picklists, an optional 'tethered' mode to keep the catalog window synchronized with the server, better timecode support, and more

A major area of improvement is the handling of many new media file types:

Media Format Support
  • Automatically synchronize audio and video tracks from MXF files for seamless handling of Panasonic P2 and Avid media
  • Support for the Java Media Framwork permits use of third party codecs such as FFMPEG for import and playback of additioanl media formats
  • New importers to read metadata from MXF, MPEG, PDF and HDV files
  • New Quick View information dialog displays information about selected media and other files without having to import them, including QuickTime information, a quick viewer for text files and ZIP archives, and a hex viewer for binary files
  • Support for adding QuickTime metadata annotations when exporting files
  • Better control over which importer to use when importing media files

Other new features involve improved functionality in the Tree Navigator:

Tree Navigator Enhancements
  • Major enhancements when browsing the contents of the server via the tree, such as being able to play clips or move them between catalogs without having to open a new catalog window
  • The tree now lists individual files as well as folders, making it easy to analyse or play any clip without having to import it into a catalog first
  • Smart folders let you quickly select clips in memory or perform queries against the server ("show me all clips assigned to me whose status is 'Awaiting Approval' and which are more than 3 days old")
  • Combine several Group By filter terms by selecting multiple items in the tree
  • Folders are now spring loaded

Some of the features described above are specific to the Professional or Enterprise editions of CatDV, or require purchase of the CatDV MXF Option and a third party MXF codec.
