Live HTML Publisher

The Live HTML Publisher is an optional add on to the CatDV Workgroup Server that lets you provide access to the CatDV database to anyone with a web browser.

In contrast to the HTML Export capability of the CatDV 7.0 client application, which lets you export static pages from a catalog, with Live HTML Publisher you have dynamic access to the clips in a central database.

Standard pages provided by Live HTML Publisher
  • Browse the database, returning a list of all the catalogs in the database together with a brief summary of the contents of each catalog (dates, tapes, and clip types included in that catalog).
  • Provide details of a particular catalog, including a list of all the clips in that catalog.
  • Provide details of a particular clip, including thumbnail, a list of all the available clip properties, and a link to the preview media if available.
  • Perform a search based on keywords, tape, timecode or date, and return either a list of matching catalogs or of matching clips.
  • Display summary statistics about the database (total number of clips stored, etc.)

Live HTML Publisher consists of Java servlets and JSPs (Java Server Pages) that communicate directly with the MySQL or Oracle database to display the contents of the database as web pages. It includes a media servlet to directly publish media files through the web interface, so clips can seamlessly link to their preview movies or other media files.

Below are some screenshots of the basic capabilities provided by Live HTML Publisher "out of the box":

The pages provided are designed for use as templates that can be customised to change the appearance and functionality of the site if you or somebody in your organisation is familiar with web site development (such as HTML, XML, stylesheets, and Java servlets). For an example of a web site built using Live HTML Publisher take a look at the FILM Archives case study.
