Question

Is Live Capture available for Windows?

Answer

For technical reasons the old built-in Live Capture command is no longer available in CatDV 6 under Windows. (It hasn't been available on the Mac for some time, so this brings the two versions back into feature parity.) Unfortunately, while Live Capture Plus 2.0 provides an alternative DV capture solution on the Mac, it's not currently available for Windows.

It is straightforward however to ingest and log DV material under Windows, and create CatDV catalogs and previews, by using the free Movie Maker application from Microsoft:

  1. Connect your DV camera or deck to the computer (you will need an OHCI FireWire interface)
  2. Launch Windows Movie Maker
  3. Select "Capture from video device".
  4. Choose a file name and location and press Next
  5. Under Video Settings, choose "DV-AVI", then press Next
  6. Under Capture Method choose "Capture the entire tape automatically"
  7. Press Next to start capture.

Once capture completes, import the resulting AVI file into CatDV, then use automatic scene detection, build previews, manually log clips etc. as required.
